Tomorrow
TOMORROW
Tomorrow, the man promised.
I will do it tomorrow.
I will make the bed
sweep the floors
start a journal
write a book
win an award
visit Ireland
tomorrow.
go parasailing
do a half marathon
give blood
read the Bible
learn French
and join a band
tomorrow.
Tomorrow,
I will walk the dog,
shovel the sidewalk
paint the shed
smile more often
and talk less
tomorrow.
Daily, he placed his burdens upon Tomorrow.
Tomorrow staggered along
every single day,
bearing the weight of the man’s guarantees.
Tomorrow,
I will be a better father
be a better husband
be a better son
love my neighbors
wish on a star
and do my best
tomorrow.
Tomorrow no longer cared.
He had carried the burden for far too long,
and he let it crash to the ground.
And the next day,
Tomorrow came for everyone else,
but not the man.
He was buried among the ashes
Of his unkempt promises.
