too deep for tears

sorrow is a lonely pain,

though grief is meant to share;

sadness comes like summer rain,

but sorrow winters there.

woe is less whan love is nigh,

grief, when comfort near;

sadness passes with a sigh,

but sorrow lingers here.

a heavy heart hangs, chill and cold,

within a breast of lead,

dormant; who can wake the old

beauty-seeking life, now dead?
