Too Much

Dear body,

They say you are too much,

Too much color, too much hair, too much space.

They ask you to be less,

Less foreign, less exuberant, less strong.

They tell me to love you less,

To change your shape and fit you into a form you were never meant to belong in.

Like attempting to fit the entire ocean into a single bottle,

or carrying all the earth's air in a small bag,

you are too much to constrain,

you will not be held down,

you carry me, past, present and future,

you carry my thoughts and sorrows and stories.

You do more than they could envision for you,

and more than I appreciated of you.

Dear body,

I say you are simply too much for them to handle

but you are just enough for me.
