Too Old, Too Young

At five I think it insane
To be alone on a plane
Flying towards someplace strange
Where no one knows who I am.

At eight I begin to hear
"You must be the adult here."
And I can't believe my ears;
Isn't that the adults plan?

Eleven, babysitting
Three kids, and I'm unwilling.
Every day more yelling.
I want to be on the lam.

I know sixth grade is early
When my mom asks politely
"Don't you want to be pretty?"
Placing lipstick in my hand.

My freshman year of high school
Falling in love is so cool.
I can't see I am the fool
And the love a glaring scam.

In all my nineteen years whole
People call me an old soul.
I feel that only I know
It's here solely by demand.
