The Tooth Truth
Sitting in school
I am in fourth grade
A wiggly baby tooth
I have one today
Back and forth,
I loosen it up
Who knew such a thing
Could be so fun?
With each sway it becomes looser
I’m lost in deep thought
Then it finally comes out
With a “Pop!”
“Teacher, teacher!”
I yell in class
“I have to go to the nurse,
Can I have a hall pass?”
When she asks why
I give her a big grin
With the tooth in my hand
And blood on my chin
She notices the space
Where a tooth used to be
Gives me a pass
So now I can leave
When I get to the nurse
She gives me towels and a bag
I am so proud
Of the little treasure I have
Taking my sweet time
I walk back to class
And I think up myself
The ultimate test
Have you ever questioned
What was real or a lie?
What about Santa or the Tooth Fairy?
With this test I shall find
Next, I think
And conjure a plan
As I walk through the halls
With the tooth in my hand
“I won’t tell my mom!”
I think in my head
“I’ll place it under my pillow
When I go to bed”
If there is a dollar
‘Neath my pillow when I wake
Then the Tooth Fairy is real
And Santa is not fake
But if there is not,
Then my mother would have lied
My entire childhood
I will probably cry
I finish the day in school
Then proceed to go home
I can’t wait to run up
Into my bedroom
Getting home was easy
Now comes the hard part
Eating and talking around my mom
Just waiting ‘til dark
Bedtime rolls around
She tucks me into bed
But little does she know
Of what lie under my head
I drift off to sleep,
Morning will come soon
I can’t wait ‘til the sun comes
To light up my room
Then suddenly I jolt
Myself up and awake
Shove my hand under the pillow
And that same bag I take
“What?!” I think
“This cannot be true!
…If the Tooth Fairy is fake
Then Santa Claus is too…”
Flashing through my mind
Everything falls into place
Stockings and chimneys,
Presents under the fireplace
Of course that makes sense!
Santa Claus can’t be real
And deliver presents to the whole world
For a milk and cookies meal?
That’s not possible!
Reindeer can’t fly
Can you climb down a chimney?
Neither can I!
But even with the truth,
I can’t stop myself
The tears start pouring down
That is just how I felt
I run to my mother
And tell her what I did
I know she is a liar
Can I ever forgive?
