The Touch of Humanity
The trill of a parakeet, the song of the breeze,
The hibiscus's sweet fragrance--
Moments of peace like this
Beg for a hint of reverence.
Lying along the sandy shore
I have no human need;
The luscious trees all bear me gifts
Free of gratuity.
But, oh, how the waves of sorrow fill my anguished soul!
Over the brim, they overflow;
The vitality of this heart is fainting,
Yet no one cares to know.
Deserted in this wilderness,
I find no warmth or joy;
The sun's rays have ceased to warm me,
And my flesh it has chosen to destroy.
The blatant caw of a seagull,
The grainy touch of the sand,
The stench of fish in the sea
Are the produce of the land--
But the whisper of a woman's voice,
The strong grip of a man's hand,
The giggling of innocent children
Signal signs of my homeland.
Oh, give m that which I yearn for,
Give me that which I need.
For nature's elements cannot replace
My need for humanity.
