In The Of Town Downhigh
In The Town of Downhigh
Rushed by the night and silenced by the daylight.
When I’m down, I’m down
Looking up at those Ivory towers praying that one day I will reach those heights
Meanwhile my mind tries rationalize the world for me screaming “you’ll never make it”
“Society is against you” “you're just a statistic” “another number on the wall”
Oppressed because of the color of my skin,
Oppressed because I have breast instead of a flat chest,
Oppressed because of my financial status.
“Do I belong here?”
“Am I doing the right thing?”
These question that are constantly flowing in and out of my mind on a never ending loop
Like a broken track I just can’t fix.
Here in Downhigh we are surrounded by mountains and hurdles very tall mountains.
Whether it’s coming from town or from the mouths of the people next door.
We are surrounded.
Trap in a subconscious cycle of hate
That push on us so hard one can almost feel the wall closing in on themselves.
The only escape is your work.
Until I’m told “you’re not good enough”
My words, My voice is not good enough
I feel my vocal cords shut until it becomes to hard to speak
Now I don’t say anything at all.
The pressure in my chest makes me feels as though you are drowning
in the tears I refuse to show the world.
“ I am strong brave and bold, I am strong brave and bold”
I repeat to myself but when that doesn’t work I take flight.
Running up those mountain
Could things get any lower.
Now I am numb
But I keep climbing and climbing
Was it from the cold or all the the pain.
I reach the top
The stars so bright I was blinded by it’s beauty as it over through me.
But I found no peace.
My eyes clouded by the water
The pressure in my chest would not let loose at the top of the mountain.
How could I feel so down when I was standing so high at the top of my hurdles
The I realize
Now I’m standing face to face with those Ivory towers
I can only pray that one day
All my people will reach those heights.
