Toxic vs Dedication

Anybody can claim love and sometimes they are very convincing.
From an early age they engrain the saying into your head over and over that it becomes your truth.
Innocently you believe what they say and create a sense of false bliss.

As you grow in age you begin to notice things that contradict the old saying.
Restrictions on what you do with who and when.
Your bank accounts, text messages, clothing, and friends always get a disapproving glance followed by a stern speech of inadequacy in private.
How could you leave somebody who loves you though?

They yell, scream, and argue “Because I love you” they claim.
Eventually your love for them fades and resentment grows.
The person who was your source of security becomes an example of who you’d hate to become.

Once the damage is done, you flee to a safer space but are emotionally drained and confused.
The trust of others is tainted and the perception of liars is everywhere.
The idea of “love” is broken and unpleasant.
You alter your future based on the individual who claimed love.
Kids become undesired, soul mates become a fantasy, and marriage seems like a dream.
The shell of what once was takes your place.

When genuine love comes your way, you push it out.
The person attempting a connection gets hit with a wall of uncertainty.
Still they persevere on, greeting each rejection with patience and kindness.

The constant attention creates a crack in your wall.
The sheer determination to merely be in your presence is an experience unheard of.
The fear of false love is paralyzing but the thought of a soft hand is liberating.
Taking a chance you let your shield fall and get rewarded with things others take for granted.

A good morning text or an out-of-the-blue phone call make your day.
Flowers and chocolates left at your car brings you to tears.
And seven months later just having someone look at you like you’re their world can’t be recreated.

A relationship blossoms with unconditional love.
Honesty and trust come naturally.
Happiness and laughter comes effortlessly.
Your best friends doubles as your partner and there’s nobody else you’d rather be with.

The words “because I love you” shift in underlying meaning.
Sincere feelings and emotion put power behind the phrase.
Someone who stays by your side through thick and thin has proven their dedication to you.
Why do you stay with the same person for so long? Because I love you.
