The Tragedy Of Underachieving

Nowhere near the front,

nor anywhere near the back,

he was totally unnoticed

in the center of the pack.

Neither chargin for the lead

or falling far behind,

just hanging in the crowd

who's distinctions were combined.

When he got near the bottom

he strove toward the top.

Then as he neared the center

his effort began to stop

But the last guy didn't catch him

That would have been disgrace.

So he maintained status quo,

and kept the leader's pace.

Then some who failed envied

how he kept up with the field,

but he wasn't satisfied

when the champion was revealed.
