Tragic, Gorgeous

Something small enough to carry Between two moments of ordinary A word that stays light in the mouths of the eerie Instead of settling somewhere heavier in the bodies of the weary The evening keeps arranging slowly Streetlights switching on one by one, although we Knew the city was trying to decide only How much distance between us would control me But, oh, God, You look so pretty When you tell me that You love me And I hate the way I notice that first Before the meaning of your thirst Before the risk Before the arithmetic behind my ribs Your flavour makes the future sound almost reachable Resting just past the edge of the table No longer inconceivable Where your hand keeps moving closer to mine Waiting for permission that has already been assigned. The sentence doesn't leave you easily Crossed the air between us dreamily And I hold it greedily Now nothing can reason with me The way you say love Makes the room feel briefly larger, love Something about the way I hear it, love Makes the door feel further away, love Looking at me when the silence returns The word has landed where it deserves The certainty of someone confirmed The fragility of certainty, disturbed And, oh, God, You look so tragic When you tell me that You need me.
