Trapped
This poem is a set of three that is based on the Holocaust. The first is of a young adult Jew during the Holocaust, the second is a mother of a Nazi right after the war, and the third is of a present-day student learning this history in school.
Trapped
Please God, don’t let me get trapped behind barbed wire,
Where many people take their last breath within a fire.
And the only stars are stitched clumsily on our shirts,
The Nazis look at us no more than they look at dirt.
How can humans be like this?
Why are they hurting us?
They blame us when the economy began to fail,
Oh! Why didn’t we take the chance to bail!
They dispose of us thinking we have no clue,
Even the children chant “goodbye Jews!”
How I wish I could
Spin
Swirl
Survive.
My parents would remind me to be brave,
But how can I stay strong when I am treated like a slave?
The death of one child makes no sense,
How can the Nazis kill so many without getting tense?
We thought torture would last only a little while,
Then we saw the camp go on for miles.
Many of us didn’t know about the death camp,
It’s a nightmare with a Swastika stamp.
The Nazis think they’re helping their country by having Jews burned,
But what if the tables were turned?
People don’t do anything because consequences are cruel,
But those who don’t help I consider a fool.
Hitler and the S.S. army are strong,
This is why people do what is wrong.
It’s easier for people to go with the crowd,
Only a few will state the truth loud.
People need to step out of their shell,
Help us out, give us a yell!
Silence.
Please God, don’t let me ignore the people crying out,
My son was a Nazi and I had much doubt.
Father had disowned his son,
Oh! What has this war done?
He used to be a Christian lad,
Before he followed Hitler who went mad!
The walls look bare without the pictures of Saints,
And then I got the news that about made me faint.
My son is dead,
He died in a hospital bed.
I love my son, though his intentions weren’t good,
Why they killed so many people I never understood.
I’ve heard some surprising news,
There was a Nazi who helped the Jews!
For many Jews he
Helped
Hid
Hoped.
Why wasn’t my son more like this?
What did Hitler have that was so inviting?
Hitler had control and rules,
The youth thought it was real cool.
They were getting caught up in it like a game,
I wish they realized things would never be the same.
Nazis thought they were doing their country a favor,
When really they were killing their neighbors.
Once the youth started listening to Hitler, they wanted more,
They were convinced Jews were the cause of their misfortune and war.
They were told Jews were not like us,
So man, woman, and child were killed without a fuss.
Nazis were taught Jews were monsters,
Killing them would make their country prouder.
I am happy never,
Because my son is gone forever.
Please God, let us always remember the Jews who perished,
Their short time on Earth is forever cherished.
Our eyes, we try to shield,
From the devastation in Auschwitz, as long as 5,000 football fields.
Uncover your eyes,
Take a look at the size.
The brainwashed Nazis were influenced by leaders,
Couldn’t they use their powers for something needier?
Piles of clothes, hair, suitcases, and shoes,
Evidence the killing of six million Jews.
Never
Fight innocently
Follow blindly
Forget the Jews.
The Holocaust went on long,
Because the Germans didn’t know it was wrong.
Many were sheep and followed blindly,
So when one wasn’t nice, the others didn’t act kindly.
The Holocaust must continue being taught,
Because if it isn’t, it might be forgot.
History repeats,
So we should attentively listen in our seats.
Our class listens and sits,
As we learn about 1.5 million victims at Auschwitz.
Every person is individual,
From the small to the tall.
But each man and woman,
Are both human.
The Holocaust must be studied and understood,
So we know evil doesn’t equal to good.
Friendship should not be determined on the spot,
Or whether Jew or not.
Friendships can be with anyone,
And hopefully everyone.
God made us all equal,
So let there never be another sequel.
