Trapped before Love
Who he was didn’t show until we were alone
He hated me but wanted me and kept me as his own
I was a thing, an “it” of sorts, that needed some repair.
Complaining, yelling, screaming, but he didn’t even care.
I was just his plaything, there for his own good.
He made me be so perfect, fixing how I talked and stood.
Love was… well… impossible, a word he didn’t even know.
Like standing out in blaring heat and asking it to snow.
But you came right when I needed, you were the anchor in the sea.
You shielded me from terror, then got down on bended knee.
I cried with happiness as you kissed me for so long
I couldn’t imagine how anything could ever make this wrong
You told me we could run away and hide from him, my past.
We tried and tried, but every time he caught up way too fast.
He’d spew so many vulgar words I couldn’t keep them straight.
Then he would drag me home and beat me into a worse state.
Then finally, you saved me from this nightmare called my life.
You made me happy and content to laugh and be your wife.
He finally got locked up for years, my wounds all testified.
They showed what he had done to me and how I’d almost died.
Love is an amazing word, I couldn’t even try
To figure out what word described that life so filled with lies.
I’ve never been so happy, so grateful for someone
As I am now that I’m yours and the horrors are all done.
