Trauma

Lately you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t carry some form of trauma. Whether it’s from past relationships, from family, or from experiences that the rest of us struggle to even imagine. These days trauma is as common as the flu and twice as deadly. Yes you heard me right. Trauma is no joke, but the funny thing about trauma is how it distorts the details. From the nightmares, the dissociating or panic attacks, overtime you begin to forget what happened and what you let yourself believe happened. Perhaps you hide the details to protect your mind. Your fragile mind that the world is fighting so desperately to shatter. Or perhaps reality fuses with nightmares til every breathe carries a darkness that you dare not mention. This silent knowledge that pain equals weakness and weakness leads to more pain. We cannot escape the cycle. Depression gets broken down to “negativity” and every tear becomes your fault. Who are we if not broken? Expecting someone to come along and put us back together as if they aren’t just as shattered. But that’s the funny thing about trauma, most of them will never know.

I'm a Grad student now studying Biochemistry and Biophysics (not sure how I got there). I guess I've been using this site for nearly 8 years now though sometimes I went years without writing much of anything. I write what I feel and I write what I need to let go of. Sometimes I write about a dream or a nightmare I had, If I can tell the difference. I fell in love for poetry in high school and continued to write in college. I hope to publish a book someday as well (leave a comment if a poem speaks to you). P.S. My Instagram is @CottonCandyPoems
