A True Writer

I didn’t want to be a writer.

I used to hate writing,

But I am a writer because I have to write.

I have to express myself

I don’t wear my heart on my sleeves

But on paper I don’t hold back.

I let my heart bleed

My journal is my heart

It is there where I am completely vulnerable

And it is there where I create my works of art

On my late nights when I can’t sleep

Or just before the dawn

It is just God, my journal, and I.

It is then that I sing my song

I trust them more than I trust my own best friend

And everything that is inside me runs wild and free

I’m thankful for the beauty of creativity

People think I write for them,

But in reality I write for me.

To be a writer,

You cannot be afraid to feel the things that hurt you

You cannot be afraid to wrestle with your insecurities

You have to wrestle with everything

A true writer is not afraid to go to dark places

A true writer can be uncomfortable

And know that it’s alright to feel that way.

A writer cultivates their pain into beautiful works of art

Because true art is created when everything else falls apart.
