Truly Great Enough
I’ve grown old and tired
Hearing it around me
To those who put in no work at all
They wouldn’t know what it takes
To be truly great
I work so hard, day in, day out
Hardly even sleep
Boy what I’d do to be great
For someone to realize one day
The amount of work it takes
Trying to be truly great
Oh, I really can be.
The once familiar words
The ones used to build my shallow home
Becoming slowly unknown
To be truly great
I’ve known what it takes
Every step of the way
To work harder, when you can’t
Be better than you were
And never hang your head in defeat
For someone, one day
Will finally see
I really can be.
Dig me out of my shallow home
Pull me away from the foul sounds
The can’ts, nevers, and ever’s
The not good enoughs
All I’ve ever been is almost
Stuck in second place
But I really can be.
Push myself away from it all
Cut the string at the last sound
Taking all the weight it can take
To only finally break
Hearing one last not good enough
To force the great enough inside
Break me into first place
I have become.
I’ve become good enough
But it’s never enough
I must be truly great
Build myself a castle
Shielding me from the hate
An impenetrable fortress
I will be.
