Truly in Love
I remember when he said he loved me.
It felt so right at the time, so good,
So empowering to be in the passenger seat and say it back.
He leaned over and kissed me, even though I would be past curfew.
I didn't mind and neither did he.
That was when he cared.
It started slow, but I noticed the change.
He started asking me if we were worth it,
"Why are we even together?" he would ask.
I would always say, "I'm not sure,"
Especially if you're not sure either.
He would say "Because I love you."
I believed him too.
I was blinded by his words, and I ignored his actions.
If he had loved me, he would have made sure I was doing okay.
He would have asked me how my day was.
He would have listened.
But he never did, and I never noticed.
He never really loved me.
