The Truth

  • Education. Preparing you for what, college? College. More education. Preparing you for what? Life. Work till you die. What if we die before then? What is the point of hours of homework every week? Why do we need to wake up early and go to a learning place, only to come home to study and feel stressed with due dates and problems we don’t get? Schoolwork can take up your whole night, only to be assigned more work the next day, and then guess what? You have a test in two days. You have a test for another class tomorrow. You have another test next week. 8 hours of sleep? Not happening. Eat a healthy lunch? Not with the food they serve you at school. Have breakfast? Who has enough time? You are told to love God with all your heart and spend time with Him, but in reality, who has a lot of time for that? The average person spends less than 5 minutes of time with God everyday. Yet to be a well-rounded person we are supposed to have a 4.0 GPA, be in a sport or five, play an instrument or twelve, go to youth group and church every Wednesday and Sunday, attend school events, and hang out with friends outside of school and church. We also have family. When is family mentioned in this? Most of us have terrible relationships with our parents and once your family wants to actually do something with you, you either have a test to study for or a paper to write. What’s the point of all the homework? Half the time it’s all just busy work. Why do we need to come home everyday after a long day at school and have more...school? Then there is the topic of people at school. You compete with other people for a better score on a test or a better subject for your paper. We shouldn’t be competing with others, we should be testing our own knowledge and shouldn’t be graded on how well we participate in class or how well we word our papers. The pressure to get good grades and be the well-rounded student I talked about earlier can be traumatizing. You might wake up everyday like me and not want to go to school. Forcing yourself out of bed, you’re judged on how well you put on a show for your teachers and peers. Shouldn’t we be taught how to treat others, help out in the community, raise a child, balance a checkbook, pay our bills, save money, even change the world? Because I can tell you one thing, I doubt I will be using the Pythagorean Theorem anytime in my everyday life.
