Tulips and Oak Trees

From the first hello

To the final goodbye

we were inseparable,

But there was space between us in our last goodbye,

Enough space for you to let me go.

But it wasn’t a smooth let go

No our hands were intertwined

As they struggled to slip apart.

I held on a little too long.

But could you blame me?

You were my rock.

My rock since we were young.

And I just a pebble you watched get lost in the dirt.

You grew away from me,

Your branches outspread

Reaching to the sky,

Limitless. Everlasting.

While I was a closed tulip,

Unable to even open up to the sun.

But your absence allowed me to grow.

The shade from your branches

had been preventing me from opening up to the sun.

The warmth feels strange,

I wish I could share it with you.

But you are sharing the warmth

with a forest full of limbs reaching higher than I ever could.

I miss you,

But we are better off apart.
