All its great accomplishments.

All its glory, sorrow, and strife.

These pages record our long history.

From Ramesses and Hammurabi long ago

To Jefferson and Churchill more recently.

Our past serves to guide us

A strong foundation for our future.

Also sewn onto those folios

Are records of great innovators.

The written work of Pythagoras and Pascal

Made satellites, bar codes, and binary codes

The indispensible elements of modern life

And inspiration of tomorrow’s creators.

And etchings of ink do also hold

The most startling thoughts of a species.

 “To be or not be, that is the question”

Answered simply by “I think therefore I am”.

These great thinkers make us mere mortals

Greater than just irrational beast.

I talk of course of books

Those deceptively small objects.

Yet ideas are held within books

And these ideas are the basis for all action.
