Twenty-Three Years in this Skin
Twenty-three years in this skin.
It tells a story separate from any other.
From the loss of my brother,
who only had nineteen years in his own body,
to meeting my heart's compliment.
This skin has a script of its own.
Lines emerge with each experience
as an indication of a journey rather than distance travelled.
As a runner, hundreds of miles
of stomping pavement,
have left a vertical line 'tween eyes.
A valley for sweat,
cells excited by the sun's arms
sending heat coursing my body,
at the completion of another marathon.
As a believer, laughter dances through my soul.
Heart beating faster,
molding parenthetical indentions 'round a smile.
A symphony of joy,
muscles contracting and syncopated.
Shipping electricity though every limb,
while thanking God for good company.
As a child, wisdom tunneled my ears,
neurons firing constantly.
reminiscent of a bookshelf hanging over a set of raised brows.
An indication of fervence,
listening, acknowledging,
adding stock to the brain
and power through intention.
Twenty-three years in this skin,
which contains my energy, spirit, and passion.
As the vehicle of my reality,
travelling with a destination and no point of view,
the possibilities are infinite.
Lines emerge with each experience
as an indication of a journey rather than distance travelled.
