Two Long Island Iced Teas

We need not stay here any longer
                         yet we pause, watching
                         godwits skewer clams

Our feet peg down in damp sand
wind off the beach plaits a twist
                         of hair along your ear

                         We could stay here forever
                         listening to waves sing ballads
of lovers dawdling at a shore
