The type of Girl I Am

Sweatpants in the dead heat and long sleeves

Rather laugh about a stupid joke

Than tell you what I mean.

I am the girl who doesn’t like to feel.

It’s almost 12 AM and the library’s closing

Reviewing flash cards under a dim street lamp

Passing by the upper classman smoking

I am the girl trying to get to Law School.

It’s 10pm on a Friday and the frat parties are wild,

We laugh and dance and flirt with the boys.

Making people laugh with the dumb shit I say,

I am the girl who they think is a ditz.

My new friends ask me about my family

Homecoming weekend and they aren’t here

I just laugh and say they’re busy

Cause the truth is a little harder to hear

When I was five I learned a harsh truth of life

Love doesn’t last and neither do faithful husbands and wives

I tried to mask their hatred for each other in pride for me.

I am the girl who craves her parents’ approval.

I am the Girl who loves to watch the sun rise,

Because it reminds me that a new start can be beautiful.

I am the girl who makes the best out of every situation,

Because that’s what I’ve always had to do.

I am the girl who is too independent for her own good,

Because my parents couldn’t communicate,

so I had to find my way home from school everyday.

I am the girl who is a lot smarter than you think,

I am the girl who is going to surprise them all.
