Uncharted Territory
"Uncharted Territory"
by Patrick Dougherty
'Everything is awesome' they said to me,
The Earth, sky, animals, humanity.
Yet here I sit alone, all on my own,
trying to write a poem just so that
I can go to college and be alone.
I try to attack the forces that be
trying to maintain my own sanity.
I sit and think 'everything is awesome'.
Then I get the true realization.
Everyone around me also has the
exact same problems and situation.
We are all going into the unknown.
And I find it comforting knowing that
we are going to do this together.
**Author's note**
The poem I wrote is written as a square sonnet in the Petrarchan/Italian sonnet styles. The square part is where there are 14 lines and each line is ten syllables long. In Petrarchan style, the first eight lines is it's own stanza and has a certain rhyme scheme to it while the last six lines is the second stanza and has their own rhyme scheme. There is also an important mood shift between the first eight lines and the last six. Thank you for reading my poem.
