Uncle Sam
Uncle Sam is his name
He wants me to succeed
He wants me to contribute
He wants his family, his nation, to grow
He acts so there is “no child left behind”
I know this isn’t true
He leaves many behind
I got left behind
Fell through the cracks of a broken system
Too rich to qualify for support from my Uncle Sam
Too poor to pay for it all myself
Uncle Sam doesn’t care
There are many of my brothers and sisters out there
Medical bills that devour savings
Houses that get foreclosed and leave us on the streets
Relatives dying
Leaving us to pick up the pieces of our souls
While Uncle Sam expects us to be prodigies
We all need teaching
We all try to learn
But Uncle Sam has abandoned us
The middle child, middle class
Can’t pay for college but get looked over for aid
Uncle Sam tells me he loves me
Uncle Sam tells me that he cares
But by the end of the day Uncle Sam is nowhere to be found
