Uncle Sam Said

By: Kyle Kelley

Uncle Sam said he needed me

I was the man for the job

If I joined, I would be recognized as a hero

And if I would fight, in return, college

I’m sent to the desolate war zone, doing what I’m told

Treading the innocent land of overseas inhabitants

They plead in front of the steal mammoth fiend I drive

Cries of the terror stricken people swell all around me

War rages, bullets fire in every direction and buildings violently collapse

After two prolonged years, I’m flown home, or a place i imagine to still be home

Every roar of the chopper’s engine reminds me of death

Gun shots fire all around, and people die

Upon arrival, Uncle Sam greets me with an attitude of ignorance

Accompanied by a measly five thousand dollar check and a few metal trinkets

Decades later a penniless boozer

Haunted by an abundance of phantasims of the brutal war

All I See are dismembered friends and enemies

My disheartened being floats away like debris of a hurricane hit village

Remorsefully weeping in rue of trusting Uncle Sam’s lie,

I never knew how far it would carry me into a vast universe of despair
