Unconditonal Love

Our relationship is complicated and crazy.

So many questions you ask,

Always needing to be in the know.

Yet without even sharing a word,

you figure out the mystery.

I tend to criticize you,

not about anything big or important,

just little nagging comments,

I didn't think would sting.

I never saw the hurt on your face,

or imagined how your heart must have broken.

I was a stupid teenage girl, too consumed with herself,

to realize the feelings of someone else.

I wished a million times over I could take back all I said,

hurting you was certainly not my intention.

you were the one who guided my every step.

As I reflect back over the years,

I see the most perfect lady, sacrificing all she had,

making me the most perfect being.

I should have opened my eyes, for I would have seen,

that it is you, my biggest fan,

the angel that guides me,

my best friend standing beside me.

The room I leave behind, has stained carpet and spills

a reminder of my youth well lived.

Sleepovers, late night chats, texting till dawn

move nights in bed and calling you up to cuddle,

Just to feel your warmth and familair hug.

I have tested your patience,

caused you to weep in fear and in glory,

gave you sleepless nights, I am so sorry.

But in the midst of all the drama,

something special occured.

A little girl grew up,

capable of making decisions, doing the right thing,

responsibility she finally found.

It seems like a miracle,

I think I finally gained your trust.

I will make mistakes, fall along the way,

but know that you taught me right from wrong,

and even if I fall,  I will rise again.

You taught me to be a fighter, to seek my true passion,

and in your encouragement of truth and self,

I found my extraordinary sense of being.

The lessons you taught are instilled in me,

engrained in truth, based on faith,

gifts to stand the test of time.

Of all the lessons you shared, I keep hearing your voice,

to give love, you need to give love.

No matter the obstacles, or disappointments,

I know you have always loved me.

It is your love that will carry me through life,

and it is your love that will allow me to love others,

just as you have loved me.

Unconditionally.
