Undamaged Hearts

When I was just a little girl

I couldn't wait to be

An adult who'd conquered the whole wide world

So no one could bother me

Playmates, toys, time-outs, dolls

I played as I was young

But faster as the facade falls

My long for adulthood won

As I slowly grew and grew

I was afraid to suddenly see

My responsibility was stronger too

And I was no longer young and free

Homework, pressure, no more time

I couldn't catch my breath

I find myself wondering why

I grew myself to death

I sat with my list of things-to-do

Laying in my hands

I knew I had to make it through

But this wasn't part of the plan

I wanted no more bedtimes set

But now I wish that I could sleep

I wanted parents to stop with their threats

Now I wish they'd baby me

I realized I was not a kid

When I began longing to be young

But the joy of being young was missed

As I thought adults had more fun

Now I know why children are

The innocence of mankind

They don't have the damaged hearts

That adults unfortunately find
