Unending Silence

You were silent

And I was arrogant,

Screaming for the attention I neither

needed nor deserved.

Your notebooks were filled

With the replies to my endless questions

Of who and what everything was

And my head became filled

With dreams of our next starlit conversation.

But as the months got colder

and the tension around us grew,

I realized

Slowly

That I had fallen in love with you

And I’ll never be able

To say that again

because

Your blood spilled onto the snow

that one cold, dark night

The voice that you had found

and used to whisper to me softly

was silenced for eternity

And I finally grasped

That maybe silence

was the best.
