the unforgotten

I am drowning in

My own memories, in

My own mind.

I keep sinking

Farther and farther

Each time I try to forget

Even just for a few minutes.

I am homesick, not for a place

But for a time, for

Pieces of time,

For moments

in my life.

For moments

Of my life.

Sometimes

I think that forgetting

Is the best thing to do,

But I cannot forget,

I cannot

Let go.

I look around,

And everyone else seems happy,

content, at peace

With the present time, with now.

I am not

And nobody can see it.

If I tell anyone

They’ll just tell me to think of something else.

But how can I think of

something else

When those memories

Are practically screaming at

Me, in my mind?

If I could forget

I would.

But I can’t.

I am willing to forget,

But those memories

Are not willing

To forget me.

I am stuck with them

As they are

stuck with me.

(I know those last three lines are a bit confusing)
