Unofficial

It really shouldn’t bother me

that his heartstrings

are already wrapped

so fiercely

around the new object of his affection

barely a week

into his latest attempt at love

Because he was never mine

I really can’t complain

that I wasn’t finished writing our story

the one he barely skimmed the pages of

or that he never even warned me

that his interests

had transitioned

towards girls with

lighter hearts and emptier heads

Because we were never together

No one really understood

why I left the party early

sneaking out the back door

at a drunk moment's notice

when I saw him caress

her perfectly starving spine

with the hand that used to be mine

Because it was never official
