Untamed Waters
There once was a love, as wild and untamed, as the sea.
Of a boy who loved a girl, and a girl, who loved the sea.
“I long to be free,” said the girl. “As free and as lost as the sea.”
“I shall give you the ocean,” said the boy. “As long as you promise to love me.”
As the summer nights get longer,
The boy watches the girl with a warm desire.
So strong and so sweet, dancing around the fire.
He dreams of her smile, while she dreams of the sand beneath her feet.
His heart burns for her like the mid July summer heat,
He ran down the street, to the rocky coast, knowing the girl would be there.
Staring with such longing and a deep desire, at the endless array of open water.
His heart aches, knowing he will never be enough,
The heart of the girl belongs to the sea.
He looks to the sky, and lets out an aching scream,
“Why me? Why does she love the sea so?”
With his question met by utter silence, the boy drops to his knees
The sky grows dark, and the storm clouds roll in,
The girl is gone; the boy is left alone in his sorrows.
He sat for what seemed like eternity, confused and broken-hearted.
“Why does this girl love the sea, why will she not just love me?”
“Foolish boy!” bellowed a voice from below.
“The girl will never love you as much as me.”
The boy jumped back, scared of strange voice below.
With a shaky reply the boy whispered back,
“Stranger below, with your bone chilling words, why do you say such things to me?
I love this girl with all my heart; why does she love thee?”
With a roaring laughter of waves, the voice within the water sang,
“The girls heart is mine; it was a bargain made.
A mistake on her part, but all the same...a fair trade.
This very same girl once had a wish, to walk as you, on land and run free.
We made a deal you see, and now the girl’s heart belongs to me.
She asked for legs such as yours, to jump and play under the shade of trees.
I warned her of what would happen; she told me running would feel like heaven.
“I do not understand.” interrupted the boy.
“She is human in every way, so how can this be?”
“Aye” proclaimed the stranger.
“She’s a mermaid who misses her home, as to be expected.
She longs to sing with dolphins, and lay upon the coral.
Her heart belongs to the sea, and it always will.”
Struck with disbelief, the boy fled, thinking to himself, what an impossible trick.
“Surely I must be dreaming, water does not speak with such wit.”
Laughing to himself as he ran along the empty road.
The silence of the night, allowed his racing heart to echo.
A lonely echoing beat caused by the girl who loves the sea.
Through a restless sleep, the boy dreaded the rising sun.
He thought of the girl, who longed to live free and on the run.
Maybe, he thought, just maybe. She could learn to love me as much as the sea.
With that, arises a new hope, racing to the shoreline and never looking back,
He hopes the strangers voice is silent against the sand.
Blinded by his love for the girl, the boy stands behind her with longing.
“I know your secret, as to why you can never love me.”
Unfazed by the boy’s presence, the girl speaks softly,
“Dear boy, I can not love anything but the sea, it calls to me day and night.
The waves that crash against the sand whisper things that seems so right.
Do you not see, that the ocean and I are one and the same?”
“No, I do not, I love you, and this is not a game.”
“The only love I know is my love for the sea, my love for the sound of the rippling waves, the birds over-head, and the silence below.
The sea is all I know, and that is why I must go.”
