The Untaught Lessons

Teachers say you will use this stuff in life.

All these things you learn is really good advice.

Cursive.

Long division

and Newton’s first law.

But how will this help up to make bank withdrawals?

Knowing the difference between the x and y axis

Won’t help us to file state and federal taxes.

The pythagorean theorem won’t keep us out of debt.

If I was a teacher I would be full of regret

for sending my students

out into the world unprepared.

If I was a teacher I would wish that I could have shared

how to write a decent résumé

or that tomorrow is always a better today.

Yes, if I was a teacher I would be ashamed

For teaching my students such trivial things.

Ashamed that I sent my students out

into this cold and cruel world untrained.
