Untitled

The first thing she does every morning is put on her mask, From the moment she wakes up, she tucks away the real girl, inside a little vial deep inside Because there's barely enough left of her real self to fill a bottle to the brim. Because this world can’t see is for what we truly are, how we truly are Because to be different gets you weird looks in the hallway Because to be “unique” is a rarity and hardly ever complimented. It’s ironic, isn’t it? How people tell you to embrace your differences Then turn right around and ask you why you can’t be like everyone else. Because this society revolves around conformity. You can’t be different and accepted in this world. It’s simply impossible. How do you tell the pair of 9 year old twins that they don’t have friends because they talk a little too loud, smile a little too big, and are a little too enthusiastic? How do you tell the 16 year old boy people avoid him because he'd rather spend his time playing Yu-Gi-Oh by the tree on the grassy hill instead of hanging out with people? How do you tell him the real reason why his brother's friends walk him to class and sit with him at lunch? Does he connect their sudden appearance with the time those boys pushed him down the stairs? How is it that this world, these people, are afraid of difference? We are bound by the chains of what society expects us to be, rather than who we want to be. We hide behind lies, phony smiles, masks, and hold an arsenal of fake friends. Afraid to show who we really are and risk losing our friends. Afraid to love that person because of the gossip swirling around them like blackened smoke, tainted by lies and choking those who get too close. Afraid to admit that you don’t know half the words people in social media use: thot finna headdesk dae bae fleek Afraid to admit that you’d rather rock out to the new Rise Against music, instead of A$AP Rocky or Drake as expected of you. We stand back and observe the masterpiece we have created, a world full of masks placed upon creativity, uniqueness, variety, white masks implemented with the same designs to prevent an outbreak of difference. Because an outbreak of difference could break apart the tightly woven fabric of conformity keeping this society together.
