Untitled

Rape...

You may not know it but the room has turned a little more serious, and yes, rape is to blame

This isn’t a speech for it is my feelings and I want you to feel them too

So all I need you to do is

Listen...

Mom, Dad, I’m staying out late

One last project to get out of the way

Okay honey, the door will be unlocked

At that, I hang up the phone

Soon enough I’m walking home alone when I’m ambushed from behind

Pulled into what I can assume is an abandoned walkway

As this person I can now identify as male

Tears away my clothing, I can finally understand what is happening

And no one will be sending the cavalry because yes I am

Staying out late

I try to yell for help but his hand is an iron gate

Keeping in my voice

But not nearly large enough to keep in my tears

I struggle but I am weak

And he is strong

His belt is undone

And his pants are unfastened

They fall to the ground

AND OH WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?

He enters me as if I gave him permission to come into my home

He acts as if it is his palace to do whatever he so wishes

He breaks things and the walls bleed

And he does not-

Will not slow down

But still try to get away

This only makes him happy

I see the lust boom in his eyes

And oh wow

Well come on and fill me with your semen

I would love to have your child

Despite the fact that

I AM SCREAMING!

Then the gates gone as well as he

I pull myself together long enough to get home

Long enough to tell them what happened

So that my loving parents can inform the authorities

Just long enough for the police to ask

“Well, what was she wearing?”

An odd question followed up by

“Why was she out so late?”

As if those are the reasons I am now broken

As if me being violated in such a way is my own fault

We live in a world where rape is nothing more than a widespread statistic

A world where the violated are just numerical data

So I now live my life in the day

Because I can’t come home late

And its sick

And it's wrong

And it is a social norm

This poem may not necessarily be about me

But it is very relevant you see because

It is someone’s story

It deserves to be heard

And I'm sorry if I'm bringing up bad thoughts

But I want you to remember that you have fought...

And won

Because yes

You are still here
