untitled

did you ever

as a kid

jump into water just a little bit over your head?

did you ever

sink just below the surface

or maybe lower?

did you kick toward the surface

legs pumping

lungs straining

heart pounding?

do you remember the rush of

fear

adrenaline

joy

as you rocketed upward through the blue?

do you remember that first breath

breaking through the surface and sucking in air

colder and crisper than anything you'd ever breathed before?

that is how writing my first poem felt
