Untitled
"Why were our people slaves?"
"I don't know sweetie."
What was I supposed to say?
Was I supposed to tell my daughter that
some man-made decision that her ancestors
Were savages and did not know how to live
So, it was deemed perfectly fine to capture
Them, take them across the sea, sell them,
And make them work day and night without
Pay? Just to meet the follow up question
"Who dee...med it okay?"
Was I supposed to say that I do not know?
And then search google for answer hope for
One, and sit and wait for the question?
"Who gave him that right?"
Was I supposed to tell her that men believed
That God had told him to do it, or that they
Believed that it was the right thing to do
That what they did was saw as okay
Because they superior and they knew what
Was right and her ancestors were ignorant?
How was going to answer that question
Without crushing her hopes and dreams
And forcing her to grow up at the age of
Five, so smiled at her and lied. One that
Hurt more than the truth, but saved her
Innocence for just a little while longer.
Well, until she can get google to work
And ask it.
