Used to Be

I used to be alone -

locked out and then locked in;

and after days of patient searching

return home lonely once again.

I used to be afraid--

to risk the venture of a hand;

and take a step from the shadows

to be seen as I really am.

I used to be uncertain --

of where the future's beacon lies;

and who I could really count on

to be real without disguise.

Now I am not alone -

but surrounded by glowing lights;

promises embodied in smiles

that cut through the ink of night.

Now I am not afraid --

but brave enough to take the chance;

to venture into the unknown

and be the first to dance.

Now I am certain --

that wherever the future decides to go;

I never have to be alone or afraid

because I am certain of Hope.
