A Valiant Shout from the Oppressed
Dear World,
Free these hands from the chains of oppression.
Liberate my spirit from the shame and despair.
Quench my thirst for equality,
for my chapped lips long for the taste.
I have been made unworthy of my human rights,
only holding on by a thread.
Enough of poor work conditions and wages,
our sunburnt skin and dusty hands can take it no longer.
Let us join our voices, together as one, together we can.
Cesar Chavez rose from the crowd, relentless he fought,
for my rights and for yours.
Fasting, marching, growing weaker every time.
But stronger was his fight, and stronger was our voice.
He taught us to fight without violence,
but not without silence.
And silent, we shall not stay.
Because he gave me a voice, he gave you a chance.
A chance to overcome the labels that have branded us,
to gain back our human rights.
Let us shout with triumph,
let us keep his voice alive!
Let us please remember our fight,
And set these aching wings free at last.
