Verbal Grafitti
Poetry, the odd friend that's been by my side
With a helping hand that was eager to provide
Everything I needed when my life wasn't right
Even when not on paper, floated within sight
Of my dreams, my hopes, my doubts, my fears
Sometimes neither there, where, or here
Sometimes verses were free
Involving my feelings towards society
Because I did not see
The point in praising such futility that lied around me
I wanted to call out the demons even for a second
Tell my generational peers the future they were wrecking
True to form, that never sat well with them
Neither did my artwork satirizing their sin
So in third grade I
Said a haiku would be my
Method without lie
Fast-forward 9 years
I thought adding rhyme to hear
A new scheme quite dear
Unfortunately, I christened it something corny
Like an old father who's past his days of getting horny
Although sitting not too far behind
Was the old friend of the AABB line
Was ingrained so far deep in my mental
Present without words like an instrumental
And although it's overdone like a Shakespearan sonnet
Some things end up that way, like a breadroll with Blue Bonnet
Other times, my thoughts presented themselves in a quatrain
Made me feel like Cypress Hill, Insane in the Memmbrane
Where everything rhymed, because my word choice was lame
among my peers because the number looked like a Sixers game
Painfully outnumbered compared to their own
Because my thoughts had larger pastures to roam
Albeit very Nas-like, very far from home
I was a child weaned on Common and Nina Simone
Back to the free
I spent large portions of childhood thinking "we"
W for why be
E-V-E-N involved in stupidity
If life was spades, you see
My hand couldn't beat a clubbed three
Because of the color of my skin
I was connotated with a inherent sin
Spelled diffrently as the word grew thin
Starts with N and had a A at the end
So between my art and poetry
I wanted to help the world see
My views, whatever shape they decide to be
Like a wall covered in verbal grafitti
