Vicarious

Keep me from my dreams My aspirations My loves My future. Hold me back from the harm I could've done. Or from the good that could've come? We may never know. But for safety's sake, And out of fear of mistakes Suppress your dreams Your aspiration Your love. Maybe your day will come. But in the meantime, there are more important things at stake. Your future. No, not YOUR future. The future that we denied ourselves. But you'll turn out better. You'll have this piece of paper to prove yourself. After all, this is what it all comes down to. Words don't matter unless they're on paper and sealed in ink. We really do mean the best. After all, you are ours, and we care for you. Or are we doing this for ourselves? To rectify our past through you? You don't have a say in the matter, anyway. Not until you're 18. Wait, you're 18. Not until you leave our house then. But don't leave. There's a world out there that won't care for you like we did. They'll take your money. Take your pride. Take your faith. You'll have nothing left. Stay with us, we want nothing but the best for you, Nothing but the best.
