Victory Walk
Together, hand in hand, walking to a state of greatness.
Holding heads high, treading down this path
As though victory will shield them from the storm.
Hand in hand, left then right, as one.
A line of children move forward each step a blessing they don't tumble to the ground at the hand of their premature prospect on life.
Once they listened.
Once they treated this path with graciousness.
Thanking the moon for its light.
Gathering beneath trees for shade.
Letting the sweet melodies of birds move them forward.
But now, too focused on what’s to come, they slowly, begin, to stray.
As persons pretending to be wise beyond their years
Too focused on the future, they hold their heads high, ignorant of the foundation that supports them.
Too focused on the future, they hold their heads high, dense with pride in the final destination they lose sight of the journey.
Too focused on the future,
they hold their heads high, hand in hand, oblivious to the obstacles of their neighbor, they drag each other
Along this crumbling path to a state of greatness.
