View From the Sidewalk

My purpose is to be walked on

To be used

And not to be appreciated

Why don’t they see

What is beneath them

All the grime that covers me

Footprints from heels, boots, and sneakers

My body next to filth in the street

Why don’t they see

My purpose is to keep them safe

To protect them from others

And not to lead them astray

Why don’t they see

What is under their feet
