Vitamin D

White country life is not for me

I was born into diversity.

Born and raised in Baltimore

Exposed to cultures right next door.

Neighbors, classmates, teachers too

Accepting colors was all I knew.

Literature that made me see

Some people lack that Vitamin D.

Oh, and D stands for diversity

Inclusion of races is the key.

Coach called me sunshine on dance team,

There was a wide array of color schemes.

Then comes college, culture shock

Primarily white, I hear punk rock.

Urban Vibe then sets me free

Sisters who came from overseas

African, Caribbean, American too

A group of girls with a great world view.

My dream man steps into my life

And 4 years later asks me to be his wife.

He’s black, I’m white, but our cultures unite,

Overcoming adversity without a fight.

Interracial couples will be the norm

An opportunity for society to reform

White country life, that’s not for me

Give me some more of that Vitamin D.
