The Voices
The voices
Each calling out
Promising success
Promising happiness
Promising purpose
The voices always beckon
Through the streets of Manhattan
Through barren deserts
Through the bustle of Hollywood
Continuously drawing many in
And in a flood
They follow the voices
Forsaking ones most dear
Forsaking beliefs most sacred
Always reaching but never grasping
There was a girl
With teeth clenched tight
Ears also ringing with the voices
But she heard the faint music
Of a still quiet voice
With the calmness of a still lake
With the rushing of the spring wind
With the compassion of a father
Beckoning her towards a narrow gate
Leading to everlasting life
A life
Of a love neverending
Of a joy overflowing
All in a whisper
That drowned away
The voices
