Voices

Tapping- I hear tapping. Where is it coming from? Next door? My own head? Oh, my fingers? My fingers are tapping. That explains the noise, But what about the voices? Where are they coming from? Not my own head- They can't be only in my head. Does anyone else hear the voices? Of course not, There is no one else here; Yet someone must be. Where else would the voices be coming from? They are not in my own head. They can't be. I hear the voices, whispering to me. I hear them in my ears, Not in my head. Not in my head. No! The voices are not in my head! But where are they coming from? I can hear their whispers telling me what to do, Telling me I'm no good, Telling me I should die. "The sheet," said the voice, "Use the sheet. If you use it, the voices will stop." I wanted the voices to stop. If I just did what they said they would stop. The voices needed to stop. Tapping- I hear tapping again. Where is it coming from? My fingers are still. Tapping? No, more of a dull slapping. If I put my shoes on Then there would be tapping, But they took my shoes. Not the voices, The voices didn't take my shoes. I can't see the voices; I only hear them with my ears. "Use the sheet," they whispered, "No one wants you here." "You are worthless." "You mean nothing." "Just do it." So I did. I grabbed the sheet; It was the only weapon here. I wanted the voices to go away. So I did what they wanted; A fair trade, right? To do what they want And get what I want? Now, they medicate me. Not the voices, They don't whisper anymore, The people who took my shoes. They make me tired, But I can't sleep. They took my sheets.
