Waiting

To remain, to rest, to stop,

to halt, to pause, to linger,

to loiter or to dally.

The one thing they have in common,

is they all me to wait.

Since the day you were born,

you have been told to wait.

"Wait until you're older."

is what your parents would tell you

when you asked to do something.

Sometimes they'd tell you

"Maybe later sweetheart".

And being a kid, you didn't know 'later' meant 'never'

So you sit there and wait for it to not happen.

You were taught to wait your turn.

Wait in line; don't cut others.

When you still believed, you waited for Santa

Each Christmas would come and you'd wait in bed for him to come,

excited to go open your gifts the next morning.

Into the teens!

The teenage years are full of waiting.

As a teen, you're told to not have sex;

To wait until marriage, but that is rare nowadays.

Constantly waiting on a text, a call, an email.

A piece of mail that has yet to come.

The college acceptance letter, your grades to be updated.

For the end of your twelfth grade year, to graduate.

Countless hours are spent waiting

on your friend to tell you that he likes you.

Or waiting on the right time to tell your friends and family

"Oh by the way, I'm gay". But you wait for that too.

Once you're dating there is a ton more waiting.

The anticipation of the first hug, the first kiss

The wanting to see them at all hours of the day.

Then out of nowhere, they break your heart.

Then you wait for the pain to dwindle.

We won't forget about school, now can we?

We all get excited for the first day to start.

But once it all starts, all we can hear is

"When is lunch?" or "Is it (insert next school break here) yet?"

Then into adulthood.

You wait for the interview of your dream job.

After the interview, you wait for the "you got the job" call.

Then the little things you never really thought about,

like the elevator, or a cup of coffee from Starbucks

become precious seconds of your day.

There is waiting outside of work too.

Waiting to own your own car or

to start a family. Then you have a family,

and the waiting process starts all over again.

Waiting is a natural thing, everyone does it.

But, some more than others.

We as a society, are too busy

waiting on what might not happen to really enjoy life.
