Want Versus Need
I was on an island.
It wasn't deserted or anything;
In fact, Oahu is quite the opposite.
Constantly surrounded by strangers,
Always hustling, always moving.
I left Washington for adventure,
I wanted to see something different,
But I missed one thing.
Him.
"I'm independent! I can survive long distance."
I was constantly lying to myself.
I was constantly doing a lot of thinking.
I was constantly finding flaws in paradise.
The smell of cigarettes and stale air consumed me
As I walked through Fort Street,
Pigeons roamed around with no fear.
Coffee, the mountains, the Pacific Ocean all remind me of
Him.
I went to school,
I went to work,
I socialized,
But I was distant.
It felt ridiculous that I could miss a person so bad.
"I'm independent!" But really I was just alone.
I made friends, I had fun,
But I wanted to adventure with my best friend, my love,
Him.
One year of being separated,
And things are about to change.
Six years we have been together,
But in December, we choose marriage.
Dating military is hard,
But the time together makes it worth it.
Soon I can stand by his side,
My best friend, my love, my comfort,
My Forever.
