War's True Self
War gives license, a license to kill.
This license is married to reasons to use it,
So that the troublesome ones are silenced.
These reasons are petty, these reasons to kill.
Or some can be called the natural will;
That some may die so that some can stay.
For these reasons night covers day,
And for these reasons soldiers and mercenaries get their pay.
War is not fair, war does not care
Whether one is on this side or that, here or there.
War only cares that some people, elected or not,
Deemed it necessary, for reasons undetected.
War is ravenous, so the young are selected
To fight for things they do not understand,
And to possibly die by a stranger’s hand.
War does not take this into consideration,
Only the needs of the belligerent nation.
They say that we make war that we may live in peace,
But war will only stop when ambitions cease
And people work together for their nations’ increase
And put more praise on those who stop it
Than those who plan and conduct it.
War does not care if one is here or there,
Only that an enemy laid a trap to ensnare like a rat,
And deliver the soldier home, lifeless, for all to stare at.
War has a mind and yet it is blind
To the good deeds individually done.
War only cares that a victory is won.
War does not care the cost,
And only the living remember the lost
That fill the statistics sheet
Which most will ignore, until
The final carnage of war is laid at their feet;
The lifeless bodies of their soldiers if war is conducted,
A hallow victory if victory is gained for petty reasons,
A bitter and numbing defeat if it all comes crashing down.
