That Was Me
The move was quick, the old to fade
I’d face what’s new, yet so afraid
Nine years, nine lives, each one dissimilar
And now a tenth, quite unfamiliar
I’d left a life, all too fast
The friends that made my days a blast
Our move was now, a time to change
New world, new ways, so far away
That was me, the childish goofball
Big deal, big news, I wasn’t small
So this was scary, a change in tune
I wanted to hide in my own cocoon
It’s August now, I’ve faced the facts
The great new world is racing fast
The time has come for me to speak
Relive the past by finding new things
All over again must I find my friends
Awkward convos, but once that’s done then
I’ll be ready to get back in the norm
It’s the same me, just in a new skin
‘Cause that was me, the talkative roundabout
Who never let someone feel ever down
But that’s hard to do when I can’t find my voice
I’ll make it a priority, that’s my choice
There’s groups, there’s clicks, I see ‘em all
I’m new, I’m lost, I greet ‘em all
Here I find a haven within a friend
Who I met at school orientation’s end
We laugh, we smile, it’s all a blast
And soon more come and it’s like the past
That was me, a friendly familiar,
This change is feeling all too similar
I broke the shell, let myself loose
The secret was, I let myself choose
To be my own person, and talk to all
Who’d listen to my words
And hear ‘em all
Because that was me, myself, and I
I was still the same old guy.
