That Was Then; This Is Now
Remember.
Remember when we were divided?
Shame how we all lived in America,
But weren't seen as equals.
That was then.
Remember when Blacks were not allowed
To drink from the same water fountains as Whites?
We were all human,
With some of the same wants and needs.
What did it matter who used which water fountain?
That was then.
Remember when schools were segregated?
Black children were not afforded the same education
As White children.
Yet, they got up and walked miles to school,
Everyday.
That was then.
Remember those times
When there wasn't much diversity.
Ask yourself, how can that be changed?
Slowly, we are drifting back to being more
Comfortable with sticking to knowing people
Of our own races.
Try to remember that while we come
From different cultures, backgrounds, and places,
At the end of the day, we are all human.
There is no room for segregation today;
That was then.
We should love each other,
Despite our many skin tones;
Despite where we come from;
Despite our backgrounds;
This is now.
